Enjoying Our Novels!

5th grade recently completed the Native American novel, The Sign of the Beaver.  We also enjoyed the movie, but the majority voted that they liked the novel better!!  It gave more detail!  We were able to review the Native American core content from S.S. they had learned while we read the novel.

6th grade recently read the realistic fiction mystery novel, Eleven.  We were hoping their would be a sequel one day.  It was a great novel!

4th grade is currently reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.  It is a tradition to read it each year in 4th grade.  It is such a fun novel to read that we enjoy around the holidays!

Have fun reading!  What novel have you read lately?  Remember, it doesn't have to be the thickest.  Some of the best novels are short too!

Taylor Swift Live Literacy Webcast!

We just watched the LIVE Taylor Swift Literacy Webcast in our classroom on the large screen!  The kids loved it!  I did too!  Taylor shared her love of reading and how it related to her song writing.  She performed one of her new song at the end of the interview.

What we're reading!

4th grade- Folk tales **We've reviewed author's purpose (PIE- persuade, inform, entertain).  Fiction stories, like folk tales, are meant to entertain.  We also learned a few morals/lessons from the story:  don't be a bully, don't be selfish, work together, practice makes you better, etc.

5th grade- We've enjoyed our Storyworks magazine and also the biography this week on Esther Morris.  It's been a great time to do this since the story and leveled readers are all nonfiction and go along with voting.  Great connection to life, especially getting ready for next Tuesday!

6th grade has also enjoyed Storyworks magazine.  The story this week was an autobiography about a woman who had pet crows.  We are discussing the author's judgement or opinion.  You can see clues throughout the story even though she throws it in there with facts that lets us know what her opinion is, especially about crows.

Happy reading!

Enjoy reading!

I can't believe we are in our third week of school since Fall Break!  I've reminded students for a couple of weeks now, that they should be 1/3 through their AR goals by this Friday.  Students who meet that mark will receive a Book It certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.  We will do this again each month.  I believe this will help some stay on track and keep reading each night.  Some are doing great already even without the reward!!! :-)  Thanks for all your help at home and encouraging your child to read each day.
